HMRC have recently launched a “One to Many” campaign writing a letter to directors who have claimed R&D tax relief, requesting them to use a checklist to ensure previous claims are complete and correct.
The letter notes that:
“We’ve seen an increase in fraudulent claims for R&D tax relief. We also believe companies in your sector are being deliberately targeted by third parties to make inaccurate R&D claims as an amendment to their Company Tax Returns. Because of this, we’re increasing our compliance enforcement activity.”
A “One to Many” approach is where HMRC sends one standard message to many customers. The aim is to influence customers’ behaviour, so they are more likely to comply with their tax obligations. A One to Many approach is not a compliance check.
